Phase 1 Phonics is so easy to use...the topics are so nice for the children in terms of they can relate it to their own environment and their own experiences, so straight away the photographs, the pictures, the rhymes that are being used are all very familiar for the children, which helps for their understanding.

We have a topic based approach to our Foundation Stage which is perfect for Phase 1 Phonics as the topics slot in with our existing plans.

Activities have a consistent structure so the children don’t have to relearn what they’re doing every time...so they’re learning the content, rather than the skill.

The resources are really flexible - children have been working in pairs (during whole-class activities on the carpet) either mixed ability pairs, or similar ability pairs depending on what I’m looking for. It also ranges across the levels, so the more able children are able to converse more about what’s happening and what the activity is trying to provide – talking in sentences and developing their sounds, blends and knowledge.

Children who find it more challenging can still join in using the pictures to help them, using some of the simple sounds and simple CVC words – which are great. It also will help children with special needs further up the school.

The children do see Phase 1 Phonics as a play activity...some of these activities do challenge children, especially towards the level 2 end of the activities, but they don’t feel the pressure because it’s ok if they make a mistake.
